2014 YBL

September 13th – COB 52-28 Yardley 

The Under 16 Development Team opened their season in the newly formed Youth Basketball League with a super 52-28 win over Yardley.The West Midlands development based league is designed enables our development groups to play valuable competitive games at Under 14, 16 and 19 age groups.

The visitors came with plenty of size which COB dealt with very effectively as the team recorded a confidence boosting victory which pleased Coach Jade Kinch. The game was refereed by Under 18 player David Fodor who recently completed a Level 2 Referees Course supported by COB. David did an excellent job whilst being assessed by tutor Keith Bruce.

COB CVL FINALS – PLAYOFF
Saturday 19th July 2014This years tournament saw Birmingham Mets, Charlton (Telford), Redditch Raptors, Wolverhampton Slam and Worcester Bears, join the previous champions Bournville Bears and the hosts City of Birmingham.  During 3 events between April and June, high quality games with tense, exciting finishes were a regular occurrences.  With each event the teams became more competitive as they played for league positions, that would decide the ranking for the playoffs.The final league position reflected how closely matched the teams were.

Playoff dayAll teams knew that they had a chance to win the overall event.  By finishing first Mets had a bye into the semis.  Unfortunately, Bournville were unable to attend, so Slam also had a bye.
The key games saw Charlton win 14 – 12 against Worcester to book a semi place against Slam, while COB continued their good form to beat Raptors 20 – 13.Semi final 1 – Mets V COB
COB had beaten Mets in their previous meeting, but this time Mets stormed into an early lead as COB tried to force the game.  Mets held it together despite a fight back from the host to win 18-14.
Semi final 2 – Slam V Charlton
Slam’s fast pace and tough defence helped them to a 16 – 10 win over a spirited effort from Charlton.Final  – Mets V Slam
So, the top two teams during the league had made it to the playoff final.  Another exciting close game saw Mets win the event 23 – 15.  Congratulations to Birmingham Mets.

A great day of games on Saturday 28th June with COB Development team upsetting league leaders Birmingham Mets who just held on to top spot.
