March 2015 – COB – Who are we and what do we do?
Formed in 2003, we have a team of coaches and staff who deliver community, performance and participation basketball to the young people of Birmingham and the surrounding areas. We are a registered Community Interest Company – City of Birmingham Basketball 2003 CIC.
In addition to extensive activity at our home, the Nechells Community Sports Centre, we also deliver a number of hub clubs around the city on a weekly basis. These clubs have been formed through our partnerships with Aston Villa and the Premier League 4 Sport Scheme along with Basketball England and the Nothing But Net Satellite Club Scheme. For more information on these please see our satellite club section.
For the 2014/15 season we are delighted to announce the addition of a Senior Men’s team. The team will provide playing opportunities at National League Senior Men’s level and positive role models for our younger players. We are building this team ensuring we have a strong base and a seamless transition from our junior programme. We look forward to it developing over the next few months.
Our junior team’s compete against local and national competition. At Under 18s our team lines up against local clubs Birmingham Mets, Team Wolverhampton Slam and Worcester Wolves amongst others. Our Under 16 team travel north to Manchester, Cheshire and Newcastle during their season in addition to playing our newly formed neighbours, Team Birmingham. The COB Under 13, 14 and 15 squads compete in Midlands and North Divisions whilst our girls squads travel a little further south in their competitions.
Each year we take a group of our young people from our Performance Programme to overseas events to compete against some of the best team’s from around europe in addition to competing in domestic national league competition every week.
We work closely with schools in Birmingham to support the education of our boys and girls and run a variety of basketball education courses during the year to enhance the skills of our members.
We are proud that many young people who have worked through our club system are now playing basketball at the highest levels. However our biggest ongoing achievement is to help develop well rounded young people who succeed in life and contribute positively to society. Many of our alumni players return to the club to help us continue working with current players.
