Hakeem Olajuwon City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Academy at The Sixth Form College Solihull

City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club are partnering with The Sixth Form College Solihull to deliver the new Hakeem Olajuwon City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Academy.

This is an amazing opportunity for basketball students aged 16-19 years old wishing to complete further education qualifications whilst developing their basketball skills at an elite level.

The academy will run in conjunction with the main study programmes based at the college. The college offers an extensive range of qualifications to suit the needs of it’s students. This means that BTEC, A level courses and Level 3 Diploma’s are delivered enabling students selected for the basketball academy to select a course of their choice.

Daily training programmes will include both team and individual practice sessions, individual strength and conditioning sessions utilising the outstanding sports facilities at the college, video analysis where appropriate and weekly games representing the college.

In November 2017, Basketball Legend and Rockets Director Hakeem Olajuwon first visited the Sixth Form College. Hakeem was immediately  impressed with the academic standards and outstanding student support mechanisms in place. He values the importance of high level education whilst athletes continue to pursue their sporting dreams. The flexibility of courses and the sporting facilities at the college were also major factors in the club selecting The Sixth Form College Solihull to become our educational partner.

This is an extremely exciting development for the club and a wonderful opportunity for those students involved. Whilst we expect this will generate lots of interest within our club, the academy is accessible to all basketball players regardless of playing experience. We will welcome players from other clubs who wish to take part in our academy and continue to represent their existing clubs.

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Emanuel Bradshaw as Head Coach of our Hakeem Olajuwon City of Birmingham Rockets Academy based at The Sixth Form College, Solihull.

Emanuel, recently made his international playing debut for Montserrat in the FIBA Americas Cup Qualifying Tournament following a fine season with the Rockets Senior team, and also took over the reins of the club’s Under 16 team last season.

With a degree in Sports Development and Coaching, the step is a natural one for Bradshaw “ I am so happy- this is a dream job for me and I can’t wait to get started!”

In addition to coaching at the academy on a daily basis, Emanuel will also oversee delivery of the club’s school and community programme as the Rockets organisation look to expand its delivery.

Rockets MD Rob Palmer commented, “We are so pleased to have been able to make this appointment. Emanuel took on voluntary coaching responsibilities for the club last season showing great leadership and enthusiasm, giving the Under 16 programme stability at a difficult time. We were impressed by his positive attitude and ability to learn during the year.

His willingness to do whatever was needed to help the club and drive to improve players was impressive. In addition, Emanuel will take on a major off court role in developing our schools and community programme which will enable us to evolve that area of the club effectively.”

Club CEO Kirk Dawes added, “ This is a significant move for the Rockets. Our Academy is now ready to launch and provide a clear pathway for club players to continue their studies at a magnificent academic institution with a variety of qualifications and subjects on offer.

To be able to add a high level of daily basketball to this is a great move for the club. We are delighted to have secured Emanuel to this role and are confident he will be able to help us move the club to yet another level!”
